If the mouse has a roller ball, dust and dirt may have accumulated inside the mouse. Just remove the ring that holds the ball in place on the bottom and give the inside a good cleaning.
If you’re using a wireless mouse or an optical mouse (has a red light underneath instead of a ball), try to use a mouse pad of a single color. Alternate bands of light and dark colors may cause the mouse to move in an erratic manner. Also, optical mice have a great deal of trouble on reflectve or shiny surfaces like those of magazine covers and some desk surfaces. Try the mouse on a different surface to see if this helps.
